A recent study has helped researchers in finding out one of the secrets of the ancient Mayas. It has been revealed that for observing the equinoxes and solstices the ancient Mayas used a structure that was like a watchtower located at temple.

The structure over the temple complex of Chichen Itza is now being reconstructed so that visitors could be given a chance to experience the life of ancient Mayas. It has been informed that the base of the watchtower like structure was found atop the ceremonial ball court where ritual games were played.

With the help of the watchtower like structure, the researchers were able to identify the significances of playing ritual games at the ceremonial ball court. The tower would have to be reconstructed or repaired as 90% of its body is defected. The reconstruction will take place soon.

While commenting upon the recent findings, Archaeologist Francisco Estrada-Belli from Boston University said, “The fact that the sun rise can be observed behind a structure should be understood in that sense, as reverence to the sun or other star, not necessarily as an observatory in the technical sense”.
