Job Loss Fear Makes British Workers take Less Sick Leave

Fear of losing job in Britain is quite much and this is the reason that workers go to their jobs even when they are sick. An authoritative report has unveiled that this fear makes them to come to office rather than resting at home.

It seems that they do not want to give any chance to their employers to sack them. The report termed this kind of behaviour as ‘presenteeism’. The report being prepared by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has also found that there has been a significant decline in the number of sick leaves being taken by employees in public and private sector.

The report mentioned that from 7.7 days a year, the sick leaves have reduced to 6.8 days a year this time. Not only in the private sector, but as well as the state employees have also found to be influenced by this effect. The report stated that the decline in the state workers’ sick leaves is said to be the biggest in 10 years.

Dr. Jill Miller, who is a researcher at the CIPD, was of the view, “Not only can illnesses be passed on to other colleagues, but ill employees are likely to work less effectively, being more prone to costly mistakes”.
