Tomatoes have been found to be beneficial in reducing the risk for cancer. A study has unveiled that those who include tomatoes in their diet were at reduced risk of suffering from cancer.

Finland based study has unveiled that men who had high amount of lycopene, a compound found in tomatoes in their blood, were facing less risk of cancer than those who had less amount of compound in their blood.

The study, which is yet to be published in the medical journal Neurology, has suggested that the compound is found in abundance in cooked tomatoes, like in puree, sauces, jams and paste. It shall be noticed that the compound lycopene is also found in other compounds, like watermelon, grapefruit, mango and papaya.

Dr. Rafael Ortiz, the Director of the Center for Stroke and Neuro-Endovascular Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York, was of the view that the compound reduces inflammation as well as resists the formation of blood clots.

In order to reach at the above given result, the study researchers assessed 1,031 men. "These findings do reinforce the current recommendations for people to get a well-balanced diet, with fruits and vegetables”, said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein from Duke University Medical Center.
