Well there is no doubt that mere name of breast cancer can send shivers down the spine. Here is a story of a brave woman who not once but twice beat the disease. The 73-year-old New Port woman has gone through a lot while she was identified with the disease some 20 year ago. "It all happened so quickly. Suddenly I was in hospital and my breast was off”, Wendy Sharrad shared. Diseases like breast cancer not only exhaust one physically, but also put mental state under severe burden too and that was the case with the woman too.
Since the cancer hadn’t spread, she was able to get back to her life with the support of a cancer support line. But little does she know that this lethal disease would again haunt her life, when she was diagnosed with lumps in her other breast 12 years later.
She didn’t lose hope and got her second breast removed, and later she got both the breasts reconstructed too. Though she had to go through a 13-and-a-half hour operation and a bad infection, she managed to brave them out. After experiencing the ordeal herself, she is not rendering services to the Cancer Council along with selling merchandise at West Lakes Shopping Centre before the Pink Ribbon Day on October 22.
