Loggerhead Nesting on Rise along Florida Beaches

Floridian state biologists have noted recently that Florida beaches are being nested from alongside by loggerhead sea turtles on a wide ground, as per a recent report. The findings are bizarre as the species are believed to be threatened.

It has been told that the turtle nesting has hit a 24-year high. It is above 58,172 nests in the present year on key index beaches statewide. And the figures are highest than ever recorded since 1989, when the monitoring began.

Though, in 1998, some 59,918 nests were there on the index beaches. It is being said that the number had plummeted significantly to 28,074 in the year 2007.

"After a steep decline in Florida loggerhead nesting between 1998 and 2007, we're pleased to see this increase, but recognize that loggerheads, and other such species, still face many challenges" FWC research scientist Blair Witherington was cited as asserting.

As per the findings, sea turtle nests are counted in a systematic way by trained surveyors so as to identify nesting trends. Some 250 miles of representative beaches are included for the survey, supervised by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

People are being urged to maintain distance hatchlings are expected to emerge from November.
