US and NZ Need to Compromise to End Impasse

The US and New Zealand have both been seeking to build a largest marine protection area (MPA) in the world, as per a new report. The deadline was set for the accomplishment of the project for this year i. e. 2012 in 2002. However, failure of the same has been calling for more one-on-one talks so that impasse could be solved.

Both the countries are aware of the condition, said Evan Bloom, the head of the US delegation at a meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). And therefore, both must come forward and make compromises as per requirements. It is being said that an agreement demands the same.

This is the reason why the US as well as NZ has come up with the presentation of competing Ross Sea plans following working on a common proposal. However, the NZ has been planning a larger area. The US plans to restrict fishing and is being supported by environmental groups as well.

The US plans would allow for the area to be used for scientific research, while the NZ is concerned that toothfish industry may not be protected. But, Mr. Bloom affirmed, "Our objectives are somewhat different and to establish this type of reference area is one of our objectives, and so I think that leads to some differences".
