‘Effective’ Drug For Multiple Sclerosis

‘Effective’ Drug For Multiple Sclerosis

A recent research has unveiled a new drug that is expected to be a lot effective in treating multiple sclerosis. It has been claimed by a team from at the University of Cambridge that there is a cancer drug, alemtuzumab, which has the tendency to provide better and effective results.

There are as many as 100,000 people in the UK suffering from multiple sclerosis. It has further been claimed that once the disease is diagnosed, there are chances of the disease being turn into relapsing-remitting MS, during which, the symptoms first disappear and they return suddenly.

For the research, published in the Lancet medical journal, the team conducted two trials to compare the effectiveness of alemtuzumab with a first-choice drug, interferon beta-1a. "Although other MS drugs have emerged over the last year, which is certainly good news for patients, none has shown superior effects on disability when compared to interferon except alemtuzumab", said Dr. Alasdair Coles, from the University of Cambridge, while claiming that there is no doubt that this is by far the best medicine considering the clinical trials, still treating it as a cure is too early at this stage.

If University of Cambridge spokeswoman Genevieve Maul is to be believed, Regulatory authorities in the US and Europe are mulling the option to give a clean chit to this drug for MS.
