On Thursday, a Bulgarian archaeologist, Vasil Nikolov claimed of having unearthed oldest urban settlement in Europe. Vasil Nikolov is a professor at Bulgaria's National Institute of Archaeology. He informed that his team unearthed the prehistoric town during excavation at Provadia's town.
It is estimated that the town dates somewhere in 4,700 and 4,200 B. C. The walls of the town are six feet high and are 4 ½ feet thick. During an interview, Vasil Nikolov said, "We started excavation work in 2005, but only after this archaeological season did we gather enough evidence to back up this claim".
Before the recent discovery, the team of archeologists has found two story houses. During the excavation of the oldest urban settlement, the archeologists also found pits and parts of gate. It is believed that the pits thus found were used for religious purposes.
Further study over the discovery will be conducted by researchers of Cologne University. The samples of the excavation have been sent to Cologne University. It is estimated that about 350 people used to live in the newly found town. Besides, barter system was also used for exchanging goods and services. However, further studies will help in understanding the prehistoric life.
