Breast Cancer Over-Diagnosis May Harm You

A breast screening program has been introduced by the government and women large in number have been going for the same so as to ensure they are free of risks. It is being said by a review panel that over-diagnosis may be harming you instead of offering benefits.

The review of benefits and harms of screening mammography was conducted by Sir Michael Marmot and colleagues from the University College London in the UK. The Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health has told that the discussion over the same has caused many women to doubt the screening.

Results of randomized trials conducted previously were taken into account and the team found that the ratio of over-diagnosed cases to deaths prevented from breast cancer was 3:1. In the meanwhile, it has been found that identification of a harmless breast cancer is an over-diagnosed case.

It is being said that till date there is no possibility to detect if one's breast cancer is harmless or not. Also, all cancers are treated with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, biologic therapies or endocrine. And the one who received treatment needlessly would never know if her cancer was harmless. "There's strong evidence suggesting that a more holistic approach could be beneficial for patients", said Cancer Council Queensland CEO Professor Jeff Dunn.
