Mount Doom's Neighbor Erupting again in New Zealand
Scientists are warning people of another eruption of probably similar size of the New Zealand volcano that erupted in August this year, neighboring the best known Mount Doom of the Lord of the Rings.
According to the details provided by the experts, a volcano erupted in Mount Tongariro that is situated in a remote part of the country's North Island in November. The eruption occurred for five minutes on November 21, which spewed clouds of ash 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) high. It is for the first time since 1897 that the 6,490 foot (1,978-meter) Tongariro erupted in August, said experts.
Fortunately, the recent activity is confirmed to have ebbed but scientists are predicting another eruption of similar size in the next few weeks. The New Zealand Herald has reported the findings, following which several flights have been canceled on New Zealand's North Island.
"Very often volcanic ash contains microscopic fragments of volcanic glass ... and the turbine engines of commercial aircraft produce a level of heat sufficient to melt glass", Mr. Steven Miller, of the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere at Colorado State University, told NASA's Earth Observatory, in August.
He explained that the eruption ash can melt the airplane's turbine blades and other parts of the engine too, which can anytime cause a big damage to the flight due to which, flights are usually cancelled at such times.
