In order to raise more awareness in context of impact of shipping speed limits on the dithering North Atlantic right whale population, a campaign was launched on Sunday. For the same, a panel of five experts was called by the environmental charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation so that free flow discussion on the same can be done.
There are reports indicating as to how fishing gear, vessel strikes and a changing habitat are putting the life of whales in danger, as per the data shared by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation.
As per the federal Right Whale Speed Reduction Rule, commercial shipping vessels must limit the speed to 10 knots in the whales' habitat in order to save them and this rule stands expired after Dec 9, 2013. There has been no word whatsoever from the government if they will renew the rule or not.
While Commercial shipping companies request for being lenient towards them, as they feel that with whales moving with their expected migratory routes, the rule must be effective only when it is confirmed that they are close enough the shipping routes, the campaign is pretty much serious to get the result in the favour of animals.
