Ringed Seals and Bearded Seals Deemed Threatened
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has announced that ringed seals and bearded seals shall be soon listed under endangered species, according to the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
Polar bears are already on the list while its main prey ringed seal shall be soon into it. According to the Endangered Species Act, a species is said to be threatened if they are likely to get endangered and subsequently extinct in the near future.
The announcement followed a deep review into scientific and commercial data by the federal scientists. They found that it has occurred due to notable decrease in the sea ice which shall continue in the future and shall eventually cause decrease in the number of seals.
Alaska Governor, Sean Parnell is now all set to take legal action against the concern since he said that the fact revealed by the scientists is not true. "Despite this fact, the NMFS continues the federal government's misguided policy to list healthy species based mostly on speculated impacts from future climate change", he said.
He, further, added that it seems that ESA has not been applied properly in the case to protect the animals. Many other groups also asserted similar views saying that the findings by the scientist were not based on the present conditions.
