Dermal fillers could be next cosmetic scandal: experts warn

Anti-ageing injections, or the so-called dermal fillers, could be next the next scandal in the cosmetic surgery industry after the faulty breast implant scandal, experts have warned.

Dermal fillers, which refer to injecting chemicals into the skin to plump out wrinkles, are the most popular cosmetic procedure in Britain, accounting for ninety per cent of the market.

Independent Healthcare Advisory Services' director Sally Taber said no medical training is required to inject dermal fillers.

Warning people of the fillers, Taber said, "Some of the fillers are permanent and therefore if the patient develops a problem it will be lifelong."

Consultant plastic surgeon Nigel Mercer, who is also the former president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said dodgy batches of dermal fillers could expose users to deadly diseases like HIV and hepatitis C.

He added that the fillers were largely unregulated in the country and there was no concrete way to ensure what was inside and if the needles were sterile.

The expert noted that loopholes in the law allowed as many as 160 fillers to announce their presence in the UK market, as compared with merely six certified in the United States, where fillers have been classified as medicines.
