Australian scientists have revealed that they have come across a mineral which they earlier thought was found on the Moon. Scientists have named the rock as tranquillityite. It has been named after the Sea of Tranquility where Apollo first landed on the Moon.
The stone, without any economical value, is said to be around hundreds of years old. It is available in miniscule quantities in the rocks. Australian Paleontologist Birger Rasmussen said the discovery has led them sure that working of the Moon and the Earth is quite similar.
This discovery would be of quite importance as it could be used as a subject for in-depth study. Rasmussen said they are quite thrilled that have discovered this mineral as they were looking for this material since long time.
On being asked that how they got to know about the mineral. Rasmussen said, "We had been studying lunar rocks previously, so we'd come across tranquillityite in rocks from the moon, so we knew roughly what to look for and then we happened to be looking at similar types of rocks on Earth".
Its presence in the rock has helped them to know its exact age as if it would have got discovered at another place then they would have thought it to be quite young. Its age would help them to accomplish another task of using it for age-dating the rocks in which this mineral occurs.
Rasmussen recalled that when scientists returned from the Moon in 1960s. They started assessing rocks which they have got with them from the Moon. They were able to know about two minerals as they existed on the Earth, but they could not know anything about tranquillityite as before this discovery they thought it could only be found on the Moon.
