Junk Food in Schools Has No Link with Obesity, Say Researchers

A US based team of researchers at Pennsylvania State University has recently revealed that soda strike is useless, and said, junk food available in schools does not lead to obesity in children, as per a latest report.

The team conducted a research on around 20,000 American students attending school in the same region, after it came to hear the declaration of banishing of chocolate bars, pop from cafeterias and vending machines as well as potato chips. It was found that North American schools have been making their move to replace these chows with salads and veggie wraps in order to keep children fit and thin as well as preventing them from getting obese.

The research led the analysts to find that while there was a considerable increase in the junk food quantity being sold in the schools, no increase in the number of students getting fatter was realized by them.

In fact, the rate of obese amongst children between fifth and eighth grades had fallen by 4%, which was really a startling result, said lead author Jennifer Van Hook, who is a sociology professor at Pennsylvania State University.

"We were really surprised by that result and, in fact, we held back from publishing our study for roughly two years because we kept looking for a connection that just wasn't there", she added.

Since it has been found through their study that junk food such as candy, soda and chips are not the causes of weight gain amongst kids, in particular those from middle schools. She further said that the findings have been questioning those provincial initiatives, who have restricted the sale of junk food in schools and have regulated well-defined food and beverages policies as well.
