Climatic Changes May Result In Violent Storms

It has been revealed by a team of scientists at MIT and Princeton University that change in climatic conditions not only result in sea-level rise and hurricanes but, can be a further reason of increased storm surges as well, as per a recent study published in the journal Nature Climate Change.

According to the report, hurricane storm surges are reported to be at 1% risk of occurring once in a year by the team of scientists. However, the team claims after its new research that with the climatic changes that are being realized each year, there arises a considerably increased risk of occurring of strong storms in Manhattan i. e. 5 to 33%.

Stronger hurricanes are the ones that tend to wash over nearly everything, comprising sea walls to inundate communities, further causing destruction in buildings and infrastructure, says the report.

The team conducted the analysis using computer models that consisted of four climate models together with a hurricane model. Following the same, it compared storm surges of two time frames, including under present climatic situations from 1981 to 2000 as well as storm surges under the anticipated climatic conditions in 2081 to 2100.

The evaluation of two scenarios led them discover that there was a three-fold increase in the risks of powerful storms in the latter time frame. While the study has clarified that climatic changes are responsible for drastic storms in the New York City, scientists could not find combination of these effects due to lack of tools, reports Kerry Emanuel, a professor of atmospheric sciences at MIT.

“This is a way of catching actual numbers, like how much would it increase; what’s the range of possible outcomes, and how do you factor in sea level rise”, he added.
