Comet May Hit Mars in 2014

Astronomers are of the opinion that in the year 2014, Mars, the red planet, could be hardly hit by a comet.

The comet named C/2013 A1 had been discovered by Robert McNaught earlier this year at Siding Spring Observatory in Australia. It has been found that the comet holds power of around a billion megatons.

Though, the discovery of the comet has been made between Jupiter and Saturn, it is being believed that it would closely pass by the planet next year. Also, the nearest planetary neighbor would be hit by it, suggested a new recalculation.

However, the chances of the red planet being hit by the comet are low in actual. But, the odds of the occurrence of the impact are still high, according Researcher Leonid Elenin. If the red planet is hit, there could be major trouble, the report said.

It has been told that the comet appears yellowish with 10x50 binoculars. Also, its coma's center looks brighter now and shows a high concentration degree. A 1º tail could easily be seen against the twilight's light blue sky.

"If that trend continues in the next days, I think that this comet could be a great astronomical show in the days around its perihelion March 10th", said science journalist Mariano Ribas.
