Solar Cell Efficiency can be Increased Using Nanowires
According to European scientists, efficiency of solar cells can be increased using nanowire-based solar cells. The scientists are of the view that since a single nanowire can concentrate on 15 times more sunlight as compared to the normal one, this new development in case of nanowires will lead to great level of energy conservation using sunlight.
As per the research done by researchers of Nano-Science Center at the Niels Bohr Institut, Denmark, and the Ecole Polytechnique FĂ©dĂ©rale de Lausanne, Switzerland, this research will open the potential for the development of new highly efficient solar cells that can be developed using the unique physical light absorption properties of nanowires.
Though the technology will still take few years from now to enter the commercial market, the scientists studied how nanowire crystals can be developed and improve its quality. The application of `nanowire crystals' would also be useful in quantum computers and other electrical products.
The surprising discovery that got published in journal Nature Photonics, has broken the earlier limited perception of conserving sun's energy, and focuses on how much more energy can be conserved from sun's rays. This can only be possible through nanowires' unique physical light absorption properties.
