France’s Universities’ Heads Dismiss Ban on Wearing of Religious Symbols

It was in 2001 that France has come up with a law as per which full-face covering Islamic veil got banned in the public. The ban became a matter of controversy and again, a new issue has taken place on another proposal.

It has been proposed that the wearing of all the religious symbols whether its Jewish skullcaps or Muslim culture's headscarves, all should be banned. But the universities heads have disliked the idea.

A report has been prepared by the France's High Council for Integration (HCI). As per the same, it has been suggested that the ban that is active in school children should be extended to universities as well.

But the proposal is expected to be opposed by high education institutions of the country. Jean-Loup Salzmann, Head of the Conference of University Presidents (CPU) in France, has already termed the idea to be negative and have dismissed the same.

"Students are adults and you cannot limit their freedoms. We think this is a subject that requires calm, discussion and certainly not an approach tinted with Islamophobia like that of the HCI", said Salzmann.

Abdallah Zekri, President of the Observatory against Islamophobia, believes that the HCI's proposal is illegal under French rule.
