Steve Ford and His Wife to Hold Annual Winter Bird Count on New Year's Day

New Year will be welcomed by Pittsburg State University biology professor Steve Ford and his wife, Cindy, through bird counting on the very first day of the year. Well, this is what has been planned by the couple to begin their year with. They actually began the annual Mined-Land Christmas Bird Count in 1988.

National Audubon Society set up the guidelines for the annual count and as per the guidelines, the winter count can be conducted anytime between December 14 and January 5.

One thing that must be ensured is that the counting must take place in a circle not more than 15-mile-wide diameter.

Ford said they begin the count on New Year's Day by dividing the circle into sections. "It is based on the number of people who show up, and start counting. We count, or try to, every bird that we see and end up with the different numbers of species we see, and the abundance of them", he added.

Usually, 10 or 12 people participate in the count, but they have also witnessed 16 or 18 people coming forward for the count. Sometimes, bad weather becomes the hindrance as seven or eight people only turn up for the count in that case.
