Obama Administration Approves Seismic Testing in Atlantic to Find Oil
The Obama administration has finally given a green signal to conduct studies in the Atlantic Ocean to find oil and gas by using sonic air cannons, despite concerns from environmental groups that sound reverberating through waters will threaten whales and other marine life.
It has been estimated by government that at least 138,000 whales, turtles and other sea creatures could suffer because of the sound reverberating caused by sonic air cannons. But the American Petroleum Institute has defended the move by saying that offshore drilling in the Atlantic would create nearly 280,000 Jobs.
Government estimates have suggested that 4.72 billion barrels of oil could be recovered beneath federal waters from Florida to Maine. The oil industry has claimed that Atlantic oil drilling will add $23.5 billion to the annual economy. An announcement made on Friday by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management talked about a controversial method for surveying oil and gas deposits under the ocean floor.
The federal agency said that it has approved seismic testing in the mid- and south-Atlantic area, including off the coast of South Carolina, only after the assuring that surveyors will make every effort to avoid threats posed to marine mammals by the noisy blasts of compressed air.
"The bureau's decision reflects a carefully analyzed and balanced approach that will allow us to increase our understanding of potential offshore resources while protecting the human, marine and coastal environments", said acting BOEM Director Walter Cruickshank.
It will only be unfair to understate the potential of North Carolina to safely harvest its natural resources, said Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-Laurens, adding that it would only have a positive impact on development and create thousands of jobs in every corner of the state.
