Marine Le Pen Urges Europeans to Wake Up after Brexit and U.S. Elections
Marine Le Pen has been in the news since Brexit vote and her popularity has gone higher as per the recent polls conducted by Le Monde. French far-right National Front (FN) leader Marine Le Pen said that Brexit and the outcome of the U.S. Elections should serve as a wake-up call for Europeans. Le Pen was speaking at a meeting of far-right leaders in Germany. The refugee crisis has led many Europeans to question the policies of their governments. In the recent weeks, Le Pen and other far-right leaders across Europe have voiced their opinion and urged European voters to select their next leadership carefully.
Le Pen has earlier said that her party would ensure that France exits European Union. While many voters would agree with Le Pen’s idea of checking refugee crisis, her idea of France leaving European Union finds limited number of supporters. While European Union will be able to deal with the impact of Brexit, it might be difficult for the EU to deal with France leaving the union, in case we come to such a situation. The results of exit from EU would also be bad for France, economically and otherwise.
Le Pen said, "2016 was the year the Anglo-Saxon world woke up. I am sure 2017 will be the year the people of continental Europe wake up." Earlier this week, Le Monde poll showed Le Pen leading in survey conducted recently. In a survey conducted in December, Le Pen was trailing conservative rival François Fillon by three percentage points.
Far-right parties in Europe are supporting each other under banner “Freedom for Europe”. Angela Merkel has earlier said that her government could have handled the refugee crisis in a better way. There is a high amount of disagreement among leaders of many European countries regarding refugee crisis.
In his recent comments, U.S. President Donald Trump said that he expects European Union to face further exit events as many countries are not happy with the way some European leaders have dealt with the wave of refugees. Majority of these refugees are economic migrants and media reports have suggested that Europe could have avoided the chaos by keeping a firm policy on refugee issue.
