Google aims at Messaging Segment with Android Messages App
Google is pushing ahead with Android Messages app, an application that will be featuring interactive messages and many interesting details for people communicating with each other. Android Messages app is also seen as a competitor for Apple’s iMessage by many technology experts. However, Google seems little late in this segment which is already overcrowded by many messaging apps. Users have too many apps from choose from, many of which offer video chat, voice chat, free calling between users, emojis, video and image sharing.
Android Messages will be using a new standard for communication named Rich Communications Services, or RCS, which will add multimedia to messaging. Google already has Google Hangouts and Google Allo for people to use for interactive messaging but WhatsApp and Facebook messenger are among the most used apps.
As both Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp are owned by Facebook, Google is trying its luck once more with a new messaging app. The new app will become default messaging app on Android-powered smartphones.
Google is talking with hardware manufacturers to have Android Messages app as default in newer smartphones. The company has already 27 smartphone manufacturers onboard for its new messaging initiative but Samsung has denied to carry the app as default on its smartphones.
Amir Sarhangi, head of RCS at Google said, "Last year, it was about getting alignment with different partners and working to get the technology pieces in place. This year, it's about launching the service, so subscribers can start using the enhanced features."
The features will require some changes from mobile service providers and at the moment, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon aren’t supporting the same. It might need some more time before the RCS becomes a standard feature with mobile service providers.
