France Most Visited Country in World
According to the United Nation’s World Tourisms Organisation, France remained the most visited country on earth in 2016. Yet, numbers fell about 2 percent in 2016. The report that is normally released in January was delayed until August 1 this year.
The most visited site in France remains the Eiffel Tower. Almost 7 million people visited the Eiffel Tower in 2016. The tower that was constructed in 1899 has welcomed more than 250 million visitors.
While Saint Tropez continues to be visited by many people, the wealthy are leaving this site behind making their numbers drop drastically. The number of yachts visiting this port has dropped by 10 percent so far in 2017. Amid rising fuel and labor costs, billionaires seem to be turning to Italy and Spain instead where prices can be much more reasonable, according to Vogue.
About 9.3 million people visit the Louvre annually making it the second most visited castle in the world behind the The Forbidden Palace in Beijing. Additionally, over 7.5 million people visit the Palace of Versailles annually making it the fourth most visited castle in the world.
About 1 million visitors head to Saint Michael in Normandy, France, annually. One of the reasons that the numbers are so high is that this important religious icon may soon disappear. The rising sand continues to pay havoc with the church and other structures. Restoration efforts are underway to try to save this island from being destroyed.
Pont Du Gard Bridge
Approximately 1.4 million people annually visit the Pont Du Gard Bridge that was originally built between 45 and 60 AD. Many have stood and marveled at this site because of its artistic beauty and its technical wonder bringing water across the Gard River.
