Legendary French Performer Johnny Hallyday Dies
France has lost one of its most legendary performers. He was known as the "French Elvis" in his native country. The rock and roll singer Johnny Hallyday passed away at the age of 74 after having dealt with lung cancer for an extended period of time. It is a testament to Hallyday's enormous popularity in his homeland that French President Emmanuel Macron issued a statement informing the public of the entertainer's death. Many French celebrities offered their condolences on Twitter. He was not very well known outside of France. However, it is safe to say that he was one of the most famous people in France when he died.
The enormous crowds that he was able to attract for his concerts showed how beloved he truly was. A Bastille Day concert at the base of the Eiffel Tower drew more than 750,000 people in 2009. He made his career by covering popular rock and roll songs that were originally performed by American artists. He started his career as a recording artist when he was 16. He was influenced heavily by Elvis Presley. Unfortunately, Hallyday suffered from problems that have plagued many rockers who experience incredible wealth and fame at a very early age. He started to abuse drugs and alcohol. This led to a lifelong addiction problem. He was also a heavy smoker for most of his life. This bad habit directly led to his death.
Hallyday was married five times and had a biological son and daughter. He also adopted two girls. Two of his marriages were to the same woman. Many of the younger people in France have criticized Hallyday for refusing to change his style to sound more like current popular performers. However, he had an album go to the top of the charts as recently as 2011. This proves that he still had a very large and loyal fan base.
Hallyday managed to stay relevant for more than 50 years. This is a very tough thing to do when you consider that most musicians are only popular for around five years. Rumors have already started to circulate about a massive tribute concert in honor of Hallyday that will feature many huge music stars. However, it is too soon to know exactly when and where this event will take place. There is no question that many of the most popular musicians in the world will show up to pay their respects to a music icon.
