Amazon Web Services to Contain 1000 Human Genome Projects
According to recent news, it has been unveiled that Amazon will be supporting the complete 1000 Human Genome projects via its web services. The project will be made available on the sites of Amazon. Moreover, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been an active support with Amazon.
It has been discovered that the reason of putting up data on Amazon sites is that it is available for free. Moreover, the researchers had to download the data from government sites before, which was tedious. And it has been since
2010, that the data has been uploaded on the Amazon site. It was initially stored in Amazon S3.
The data is expected to be uploaded on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) and can be accessed from AWS services such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud
(Amazon EC2) and Amazon Elastic MapReduce (Amazon EMR).
Moreover, it is being asserted by the project developers that once the data is on AWS, it will be more convenient to access the data, by using AWS’s cloud computing.
It is being reported that the database is one of its kind, including a collection of largest number of human DNA databases, with 200 terabytes of data already included in the project.
The Human Genome Project was started in 2008, involving 75 companies and organizations, which worked collaboratively to study the human genome and thus form a detailed catalog of it and its 3 billion DNA bases.
The project has already included DNA sequences from 2,661 individuals from 26 populations. And it is being expected that the number will further, increase in this year. However, the data that has been uploaded contains DNA of
The project has helped develop techniques that can be employed in sequencing of DNA of other species including mouse, gorilla.
