3D Printable Robots to Help in Household Purposes

A team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has won a grant of $10m for its five-year project dubbed ‘An Expedition in Computing for Compiling Printable Programmable Machines’, a recent report reveals.

It has been found that the team has been planning to develop a new technology that would help anyone in creating their own robots. It is being said by the team that its aim is to allow people to design such robots that could help them in their daily household chores.

As per the findings of the report, manufacture of robots would take a lot of time. It would need huge efforts to build prototype printed robots, the team says, because functional origami insect is rarely found. The team has been given the grant by the National Science Foundation for conducting a deeper research into the work so that easily accessible robotics could be developed.

The researchers have explained that their plan is to achieve three stages. The first stage would include the designing and building of the machinery, followed by planning and controlling algorithms at the second stage to operate the device. And a third step would be to work out a way with which people could design a specific robot.

The report says that the team aims at creating such robots that would be available at local 3D printing workshops, allowing anyone to come and customize the shelf robot design on-screen as per their requirements. After the same, they could get it printed as well as assembled to take it with them.

"This research envisions a whole new way of thinking about the design and manufacturing of robots, and could have a profound impact on society. We believe that it has the potential to transform manufacturing and to democratize access to robots”, says MIT Professor Daniela Rus, a Principal Investigator at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).
