World Cup

Argentina and France were both pre-tournament favorites to advance to the late stages of the World Cup. When it became clear that the two teams would meet in the round of 16, it was expected to be a good game. The fans who attended in person or who watched the game on television were certainly treated to an exciting and record breaking game.

Argentina advanced out of its group in second place behind a tough team from Croatia. Other teams in Argentina's group included Iceland and Nigeria. Argentina began with a surprising draw to Iceland. They had to defeat Nigeria in the final group stage match to advance.

France had no trouble advancing out of its group. France finished first in its group. The other group teams included Denmark, Peru and Australia.

When Argentina and France met, the big question was how Argentine superstar Lionel Messi would perform. So far in the tournament, he had had a lackluster tournament and had not played to expectation. The entire Argentine team seemed flat.

The team from France is made up of many younger players playing in a World Cup for the first time. They are coached by former World Cup player Didier Deschamps.

At the beginning of the match on Friday, Argentina appeared to have the upper hand. They out possessed the French team and lead two goals to one.

At this point, France began to take over the game led by emerging superstar player Kylian Mbappe. This 19-year old would go on to score two goals in the match. His speed caused tremendous difficulty for the Argentine defenders.

By scoring two goals in the match, Mbappe tied a World Cup record held by Pele. Mbappe was only the second teenage player to score twice in a World Cup match.

Argentina would try desperately to come back bringing the score to 4-3. However, they would fall short and be eliminated from the tournament.

With their victory, France advances to the round of eight to face a tough Uruguay squad who defeated Portugal 2-1.
